how should my carpenter frame out walls for new construction shower

Sandi,

You would want him to leave an 1/8" clearance on all sides for expansion and contraction. The shower pans are designed as a 'floating' unit very similar to laminate flooring. So, if you have a 60" wide framed (stud to stud) shower opening your shower pan would be 59 3/4" wide giving you an 1/8" on either side.

Cheers!
